Recipe for Change open letter to Chancellor and Health Secretary
Action on Sugar, along with over 30 other health organisations, have signed an open letter calling for bolder and more decisive action from the Government, to build a healthier food industry.
Published:
This is in response to the Government’s Autumn budget announcement to uprate the Soft Drinks Industry Levy and review previous exemptions held on sugary milk-based drinks.
In their letter, the Recipe for Change campaign revealed a low level of public trust in food companies according to a recent polling, and urged for better regulation on salt and sugar products.
The polling highlighted:
- 74% of British adults do not trust food companies to be honest about the health impacts of their products.
- Only 13% of the UK public believe companies will reduce unhealthy ingredients in their food without government invention.
- Of those surveyed, 68% of people are in support of extending the sugary drink tax to include other high salt and sugar food products, provided the money raised supports children’s food and health initiatives.
