Labour Win's 2024 General Election
Published:
With the Labour party coming into Government today, we congratulate Sir Keir Starmer on his campaign and wish him all the best in leading this country for the next 5 years.
We, like many, will be keeping a close eye on what this new Government has up their sleeves for their first 100 days in power. Whilst prevention was glaringly missing in all manifestos, what has been promised by Labour is:
- Committing to the ban on 'junk food' advertising to children
- Banning the sale of high-caffeine energy drinks to under 16's
- Halving the gap in healthy life expectancy between the richest and poorest
We are pleased to see legislative action being used to improve health, but have been given little detail as to how they are going to half the healthy life expectancy gap. We need to see stronger commitments on reformulation and prevention, with strategies to level the playing field and ensuring that nobody is left behind, in particular publishing the commercial baby food and drink guidelines. An easy win for this new Government.
Time and time again it has been shown that voluntary measures do not work, so it is refreshing to see this new government is not shy in bringing about legislative action, however we only hope this extends to improving the nutritional composition of all food and drink.
Our charities priorities are set out in our CASSH Manifesto 2024 [PDF 1,395KB]

The escalating costs to the NHS of diet related disease are unsustainable, but in many cases entirely preventable. Providing available, accessible and affordable healthy food is essential in preventing premature death and disability and reducing the cost of a poor diet on the NHS.
The new government needs to create history and be the first to prioritise prevention by:
2. Introducing levies to further incentivise change
3. Creating healthy environments
