Prevention in health and social care
The Health and Social Care Committee has launched a new inquiry into prevention.
The topics that the inquiry could seek to cover include:
- Upstream prevention, including genomic sequencing
- Obesity and physical activity
- Smoking
- Alcohol use
- Mental health
- Healthy environments
- Healthy homes and workplaces
- Disease prevention
We welcome the Health and Social Care’s inquiry on prevention, and we will be highlighting the importance of salt reformulation for the prevention of cardiovascular disease which is one of the biggest causes of death and poor health in the country. We are currently consuming 40% more than the recommended maximum daily intake of less than 6g. By reducing every 1g in population salt, it is estimated to prevent 4,000 premature deaths with annual savings to the NHS at £288 million. Therefore, it is one of the most cost-effective measure that countries should be implementing to improve population health outcomes.
If you are a researcher, organisation or individual interested in preventative healthcare, now is your opportunity to get involved and suggest specific issues the Government should be working on.
The enquiry is open to researchers, organisations or individuals interested in preventative health. Submissions should be 750 words and sent by the 8th February 2023. For more information, please visit the Government website
